Growing up, I was taught the following things about money: Always balance your checkbook and never spend more than you make. Though these are key and vital aspects of one’s financial life, I’ve also learned that the psychology of your thoughts about money affect your balance sheet just as much as your spending habits. That is something they don’t teach you in school.
In fact, the psychology of wealth is something I rarely hear addressed except for the terrifying cautionary tales: “Did you hear about the Smiths? Well, Mr. Smith inherited $5 million from his aunt then left his wife and kids with NOTHING. Money does evil things to people.” or “Did you hear about the woman who won the $350 million Powerball jackpot? All of these so called ‘friends’ and relatives came out of the woodwork, she spent tons of money supporting them, and then, just last week, had to declare bankruptcy. Just goes to show you that you can’t trust wealth to someone who’s never had it.” No wonder many of us picture wealth accumulation with “DANGER” lights and bright red “STOP” signs surrounding our ambitions.
One day, while discussing the premise of my blog with my coach, she recommended the book “ You Are A Badass at Making Money” by Jen Sincero. She also recommended I get the Audio Book. Not having anything to lose, I picked it up from my local library and let me tell you, I am so glad I did.
What I love about this book:
Jen builds a great foundation for you to grow a healthy, respectful mindset relating to money. Not only does she expertly strip away the old wives tale of money being inherently evil and those who seek it being shallow jerks, she also helps you build a foundation for why nurturing a respectful and empowering relationship with money allows you to be a responsible and dynamic force of good in the universe. “You Are A Badass At Making Money” builds up your mental game so that, by the end of the book, you know that your building wealth is 1.) Natural, and 2.) Allows you to become the great and fully envisioned person God intends you to be (NOTE: She is not saying that wealth is the only way for you to be the amazing person God wants you to be. It’s that wealth can help you obtain the tools to be the optimal version of yourself. For example, if you dream is to help build a soup kitchen in your town, wealth allows you to rent the space, pay the utilities, and buy the ingredients to supply that soup kitchen.).
Also, starting with the audio book was an excellent call. It was like having a kick butt coaching session with Jen while driving to work every day. I actually listened to it twice before returning it to the library! In this case, I also recommend obtaining a physical copy of the book as well. The reason being, at the end of each chapter she provides activities and mantras to work on. If driving while listening, it’s a wee bit hard to safely write all of these down! In the end, I felt so strongly about the positive, mind building aspects of this book, I actually purchased my own copy!
So, whether buying on Amazon or borrowing at your public library, I highly recommend reading “You Are A Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth” by Jen Sincero! Kick butt!
